Our history

Our story dates back to 1906,

year in which engineer Karl R. Amtmann founded the company known as K.R. Amtmann, S.A., which entered the pharmaceutical field through the import of drugs by the intermediary of Grupo L.G. Aguilar.

During the 1940s, Mexico was very different from today. The population barely comprised 20 million inhabitants, and its technological capabilities were outdated. Meanwhile, the world economy was facing a severe crisis as a result of World War II.

Even in countries which opted to stay neutral, there was a constant shortage of products. The pharmaceutical sector in Mexico was no exception. The drugs needed to address the needs of the increasing population were unavailable.

That was the moment when some foreign laboratories, seeking new development opportunities, decided to establish their operations in Mexico so as to manufacture the first quality pharmaceutical products and supply the national market. Over these years, the first Mexican laboratories consolidated and undertook this activity.

Having the urge to join this development trend in the pharmaceutical industry, in 1941, Mr. Santoveña and Mr. Fernandez formed a partnership, from which Laboratorios Sanfer was born.

Upon its incorporation, Sanfer´s mission

was to manufacture new pharmaceutical products that would help treat diseases and preserve the health of people.

Since then, and to date, the fundamental goal of both Laboratorios Hormona and Laboratorios Sanfer is to offer physicians effective products that are available in the Mexican market.

In 1956, under unrelated circumstances, Professor Bustillos Sierra from Barranquilla, Colombia, acquired Droguería de San Carlos, in Bogotá. By making use of the potential of this drug store as a platform to produce pharmaceutical compounds in adherence to his high sense of community, he gave the unprivileged population access to high-quality drugs. Over time, his operation extended to other regions and Central and South American countries under the name of Laboratorios Bussie.

At the beginning of the 1960s, Dr. Ernesto Amtmann-Obregón, one of Mexico’s most renowned businessmen, purchased Laboratorios Sanfer. Subsequently, the laboratory obtained the first international laboratory licenses to manufacture and produce pharmaceutical products, thereby starting a relationship which continues to date.
